Stroke Awareness Day
May 1, 2026
WHEREAS, stroke is a leading cause of death and long-term disability in the United States, affecting hundreds of thousands of individuals each year; and
WHEREAS, early recognition of stroke symptoms and immediate medical attention can significantly improve survival rates and reduce long-term disability; and
WHEREAS, the warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or weakness, confusion, difficulty speaking, vision problems, dizziness, and severe headache; and
WHEREAS, public education initiatives such as the BE FAST acronym (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, Time) empower individuals to recognize stroke symptoms and act quickly; and
WHEREAS, raising awareness about stroke prevention, including managing blood pressure, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking regular medical care, can help reduce the risk of stroke; and
WHEREAS, students from Dunwoody High School participating in the Health Occupations Students of America Community Awareness program are actively working to educate and engage the community about stroke awareness and prevention; and
WHEREAS, these student-led efforts demonstrate leadership, civic engagement, and a commitment to improving the health and well-being of the Dunwoody community; and
WHEREAS, stroke survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocacy organizations play a vital role in supporting recovery and promoting education within our community; and
WHEREAS, the City of Dunwoody is committed to promoting the health and well-being of its residents and supporting youth-led initiatives that benefit the community;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Lynn Deutsch, Mayor of the City of Dunwoody, Georgia, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2026, as
Stroke Awareness Day
in the City of Dunwoody, and encourage all residents to learn the signs and symptoms of stroke, take preventive measures, and support efforts to improve stroke awareness and education.
